Open since 1982 in the basement of the Metro building in Wrigleyville, smartbar is Chicago's premier independent nightclub, now past 40 years of programming the full range of dance music alongside cutting-edge DJs from around the world. The 400-capacity room is built around a Funktion-One system on a central dance floor, with bills that regularly pull in DJs from Europe, Detroit, and Chicago. Its no dress code, no bottle service, no VIP policy set the template for underground house and techno in the city — and the venue is also home to a strong slate of queer events and residencies, with gender-neutral bathrooms and a notably diverse crowd.
