Diplo is the Mississippi-born, LA-based producer Thomas Wesley Pentz, who took his stage name from Diplodocus thanks to a childhood obsession with dinosaurs and was working as a Philadelphia public school teacher when he co-produced M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes." The Mad Decent label he founded in 2006 turned into a launchpad for moombahton, trap and Latin-leaning dance music, while side projects keep multiplying: Major Lazer with the global smash "Lean On," Jack Ü with Skrillex, LSD with Sia and Labrinth, Silk City with Mark Ronson, and a full country detour released under his given name. From schoolteacher to multi-Grammy mainstay, his real instrument is taste, and his catalog reads less like a discography and more like a map of where popular music has been heading for the past fifteen years.
